When it comes to music, sometimes you just need to get away from the norms. 90% of TRUE hip-hop heads, dont just listen to hip-hop. Because music is such an expression of oneself, it can not be captured in one category. The reason we have chosen the song “Just Be” by DJ Tiesto, is because, like it or not, the vocalist in the song says some real stuff. Sometimes we get weared paper-thin juggling our personas, instead of truly being who we are. Maybe we dont want to seem too nerdy, too wimpy, or too needy…But when its just you and the sounds pumping out of your speakers, you can finallylet loose, and be EXACTLY who you are. Just be….

Text-cee Battling…

This is a form of Underground hip-hop when you dont have proper equipment and/or you dont have beats to rhyme off of. This semi-legendary technique is called “Text Rap” where “Text-cees” join a rap board and either post written rhymes or battling eachother through lyrical wordage. You wouldnt believe how many people actually do this unknown phenomena. I’m not going to knock it because, in all reality, it does give practice to all of those inspiring artists, but I guarentee, this clip of a text battle I am about to show you would be a SYGUE (dont know the acronym yet?) recipient. Besides the fact that Mr. free2jumpoff needs to learn how to use MS Word’s dictionary, you come t realize how funny it is. A Word for a Wednesday (Integrity)

Today I want to start a new topic called “A Word for a Wednesday”. The purpose of these articles will be geared at givng a little insight to all of our categories.

INTEGRITY- possession of firm principles: the quality of possessing and steadfastly adhering to high moral principles or professional standards

We chose this as the “Word of the Day” because it is very important in the Music Industry. Too many people now a days are trying to do or become something that they really arent. For example, Before 2008, Jersey City and NY was filled with baggy pants and long white tees. Now those same “Gangstas” (emphasis on the quotation marks), dressing up in tight purple slacks and polos. Its unethical. If you like to dress loosely than do that, be yourself and stop trying to be Mr. “Socially Acceptable”. And to Mr. Skateboarder who carries his board around in the mall, and cant OLLIE after a whole year of skating…STOP POSING TO BE A TRUE SKATER!. For real. If you’ve been pushing for over a year, you had better have some some scrathes on those Adios (That you only bought because you want to be COOL). And futhermore, take off that HIM wristband and that Bam Margera Pentagram shirt off. Stop posing and start watching PJ Ladd, Bryan Herman and Nijah Houston and turn off that Element video. Distgusting…

ACCEPTABLE TIGHT PANTS UNACCEPTABLE TIGHT PANTS

Now for the Ladies… Stop with the “Barbie, Harajuku and Diva” middle names on your facebook. Most of you are NOT, I repeat, ARE NOT even CLOSE to living up to those standards. You are not Nicki Minaj. Never have been and never will be. Be YOURSELF, I cant stress that enough. Have some Integrity ladies, and maybe dudes will have some respect for you. The styles and trend of the female gender have always ranged in complexity and always wil, so good job on “Looking Good” in whatever your style may be. But one thing I have to complain about are those God-Forsaken peacock doo’s with the gel’d sideburns. Try a Lace Wig ladies, at least less people will laugh and point.

The Hip-hop game as a whole is all messed up. Whatever happened to rhyming about life, and lifes problems? Hip-hop was built around real people who spoke about what they have seen and been through. Now a days you cant even break down rhymes intellectually. You don’t shoot people, ad most likely, never will. You dont sell coke or pop bottles in the VIP of the 40-40 Club, or any club for that matter. You might smoke marijuana and drink heavily, but you dont “bust gats” or “pimp hoes”. Be you in your rhymes, and people will respect your grind because you kept it REAL.

It seems as if every song now-a-days, has this message in it. The only difference is in todays music it is intertwined with the fascination of money, and expensive alcohol. I guess Juvenile would just rather tell you from the GET what he expects you to do. “Girl you Look good” is a good enough reason for you to “back that a*s up!”. Even though it is very deragatory to women, and it is very demeaning, it is a DAMN good song! You know, you used to bump this in the crib, or call in to “The Box” (remember that?) and request this song to be played on the TV. Dont front… Any how, this video was chosen to be todays “Throwback Video”, because it hit the industry full force and had a huge impact on the club scene. And plus, noone can say that they’ve never heard this song before, and if you havent then turn off Tim McGraw, and put your head into this little thing called Hip-Hop! Click, Click, Click away…

Located on Avenue A, Between 6th and 7th St in Manhattan, The Pyramid Club is a Multi-Genre based Club in the “Big City” (No JerzFromBrooklyn Pun intended!). Every night TPC plays different music for different types of people. In particular, every Tuesday night they hold an Open Mic session called “The Training Camp”, in which you can join for simply 10 dollars at the door. Basically it is a place where an underground artist can go and try out some new material. Having performed here myself, it really is a great place to perfect your craft, and get over any stage fright or butterflies you may have during performances. Its also cool to just kick back, have a couple of drinks and watch as the underground circuit of NY give it their all to create a flawless performance. Some better than others, the stage is home to mostly hungry MC’s of all creeds, but it also has a mixture of Sexy Pre-Divas, Love Strucken RnB Dons, and a great host, Mental Supreme (Who is as funny as all hell) and the Swagtastic DJ Will Gates. Unfortunately, most of the acts become redundant, and the uniqueness of the show tends to wear away as the night goes on, but some of the artists actually have the capability to “Tear the house down”. If interested, sign-ups start around 6:00pm-6:30pm, but in order to get a good spot on the list, I would recommend going earlier and waiting. Since the show can possibly run until 3 in the morning.

So if your looking to perform in front of other hip-hoppers, or just interested in watching some deeply rooted underground cats, stop by The Pyramid Club on Tuesday and say “WHAT UP!!!” to Mental Supreme. Peace.

Wow. Now I’m going to be honest with you, Rihanna never really impressed me. I mean shes beautiful but I would so much rather, lets say, Alicia Keys. But in this photo to the left, she is looking AMAZING (IMO). But besides the teal bikini, and the funny looking left arm, I stumbled across a new song from off her album that may be getting a video sometime soon. It is called “Tip Pon Toe”, and I’m not going to say that I “Like” the song, but I will say it sounds like with another publicity and promotion, it definitely will be getting plays in the club.

P.S.- I still can’t believe what Chris Brown did to HER FACE. And for all you women who did nothing but justify his abuse, and allow him to slither his way back into your CD players should be ashamed of yourselves.

Theres a blizzard goin’ on outside no man is safe from!!! Yeah its really coming down all over the Eastern Coast. So instead of being down (And happy that school is closed!!!) because of the snow, I figure its time to watch something HILARIOUS. This video is by a guy named SnowFlake. Im not sure where he lives, or where hes from, but this video is so retarded (in a good way). “My first gangsta rap song” should be a “Step Your Game Up Emcee” candidate, but its just so tragic that it cant be taken seriously. I know your home either cuddling with a blanket, and having some hot chocolate and watch Court TV, but take some time to check this out. Artist of the Month – Jay Saint

Finally! An underground RnB artist that hits close to home. Jay Saint has been on point with everything this past year. Last night (Feb 08, 2009) he performed in NY for the “NewDimensionProject” and KILLED it (I missed out but word of mouth is a powerful thing!). He also is a Jersey City resident whos passion for music is irrepressible and uncomparable. His album will be Debutting Feb. 22 and even I got a little piece of the action! Jay Saint will also be performing soon in Hollywood, California, and has been blessing the mic with his vocals for a while. His drive for success is accompanied by a solid persona and completed with a God-given talent for music. His solid fanbase wil not only vouch for his potential, but are willing to support him in his movement.

We at CUTS commemorate Jay Saint to be our February Artist of the Month because not only we do believe in him, but he is a force not to be reckoned with. His dedication in the studio, his confidence in this competitive industry, and his trust in his product are values that should be congratulated. We are proud to present Jay with the title of “Artist of the Month” because we too, are loyal fans of his music. Keep doing what your doing, and your destination will be reached. I mean….Call me old fashion….But this dude is TRASH (And thats an under statement). I understand where the game is going, and to be honest, I dont like it. What happened to real hip-hop? This dude cant hold a “Flame” to anybody that I listen to. I was on Facebook today, and an associate of mine posted a status that said “Not paying attention to my professor, Im just bumpin this new Wacka Flacka, this shit hard!” I mean, be serious. Tell me one person in the industry (Besides Soulja Boy PROBABLY) that this dude compares to. Theres some present day music that I can rock with, but this? DOO DOO BUTTA. Hey I’m entitled to my opinion no? The last artist that came out that I see being a GREAT artist is Drake. Come on Wack-a, Step your game up son. You are the armpit of rap. Hows it feel to be the first literally retarded rapper?
