“Hip-hop as an art form is in chaos right now, and me and Guru feel a responsibility to protect it from being completely destroyed.” -DJ Premier from Gangstarr.

mindstate2008_3This quote is the driving force for the newest and first Official Producer/Artist hip-hop group since Gangstarr. The name of this group and hip-hop movement is simply called “Mindstate”. This hip-hop powerhouse consists of Deascent, the lyrical genius MC and Carl “Buzz” Freda, the straight-outta-Headqcourterz studio’s, producer/engineer. Buzz was also , at one time, an intern turned student turned protégé of the legendary DJ Premier. Together there style is unorthodox to what is heard on your radio now. It can only be described as a Gangstarr influenced group, who has the guts to show the world that classic hip-hop is not dead, but is waiting to be reborn. Deascent, hailing from the birthplace of hip-hop, is the young upcoming storyteller who keeps you fiending for more. This BX native’s monotone vocals, slick deliveries, prophesizing punch lines, and metaphorical style shows you that there is someone left that speaks from the soul. His producer and other half of the group, hailing from Queens, Buzz is the driving musical force behind the group. Buzz’s use of “smackin’ drums”, emotional yet classic samples, and melodic baselines, give that 90’s New York feel back to hip hop. The use of scratching the hook is also brought back into the picture, as the producer’s way of writing. “I worked with Preem for three years and I learned a lot, from sampling, drums, scratching, mixing, it was privilege and an honor. I used everything I learned and smashed it with my style, and once Deascent and I started doing tracks together, I knew that it was the closest to Gangstarr you could get.” The response MindState has been getting is undeniable. Already with a well developed fan base, a video in the editing stage for “Sweet Taste of Sin”, and has been featured on DJ Green Lantern’s Myspace Invasion Part 5, its only a matter of time before you see that album hit the shelves.
